Tip of the Week: What causes my acne?

While it's common knowledge that clogged pores and bacteria can cause acne. Acne may also be due to the following:

1) Hormones: Your acne could be elicited by your birth control pill, so getting rid of your skin imperfections could be as simple as switching to a different pill. Your natural hormone changes may cause the acne too, and there may be some natural hormonal creams that could help.

2) Diet: Acne has been linked to sugar and dairy, as well as refined and processed foods. You could try cutting back on these items to see if your diet is triggering your breakouts.

3) Stress: Leave it to good ol' stress to manifest itself in ugly ways like zits. Stress affects our skin by stimulating our body to produce too much of acne producing hormones.

Healthy Skin Is Beautiful Skin

Improving your image may help the way you feel about yourself, but it may also convey a more professional message.  While it is certainly true that beauty does come from within, there are some simple steps that you can take to enhance your outer appearance as well.  It is apparent that our society places a high value on youth.  Much money is spent on beauty creams and potions, various procedures to rejuvenate the skin, and even plastic surgery.  Each person must decide how much effort and expense they are willing to contribute toward their presentation.  While this would include many aspects, such as hair and clothing, as a Dermatologist, I would like to address the skin.

Rejuvenating the skin can be viewed on a gradient approach.  There are creams and superficial, light procedures that help give the skin a fresher glow or soften some of the lines and age spots.  For more dramatic improvement there are laser procedures.  These are stronger than face creams and peels, so they work more effectively, albeit cost more.  Beyond that there is plastic surgery, which typically results in the greatest improvement, with understandably higher expenses.

For those who are looking for a simple boost, without the high price tag, here are some tips.  First, what you put into your body affects how well it functions.  That is not news to most people.  The skin is our largest organ and it is chock full of cells that are growing and duplicating.  Cells need quality food to be healthy and fulfill their jobs. Organic foods, free of pesticides and hormones nourish our cells so that they are not trying to survive amidst a sea of chemicals.  Certain foods, such as sugar and white flour, stress our cells the most, and contribute to overall inflammation in our bodies.  This translates into more irritated skin and more WRINKLES.  Some foods, such as fish (wild caught is best) and fresh fruits and vegetables, help reduce cellular inflammation.  Wrinkles are also formed by repeated motions, such as by frowning or along the lips by smoking.  Eventually, the skin creases where these motions have been made over and over again.  Supplementing with anti-oxidant vitamins can minimize some of the damaging chemicals we encounter daily, such as from pollution.  Two antioxidants that are helpful for wrinkles are alpha lipoic acid and DMAE.  Fish oils (EPA/DHA) are also excellent anti-inflammatory supplements that keep our skin healthy and also more youthful.  CoEnzyme Q10 is also a crucial antioxidant for keeping the body’s organs functioning at its best.

What you put onto your skin can affect the way it feels and looks as well.  There are some brands that use all organic ingredients.  Some products contain topical vitamins, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, green tea, alpha lipoic acid, CoEnzyme Q10, and more.  With good formulations, these antioxidants can penetrate the skin at higher concentrations than what you could get with internal supplements.  You could expect to notice a smoother, even complexion, and healthier looking skin.  An added bonus is that some of these topical vitamins, especially vitamin C, help protect your skin from the damage due to the sun’s rays.  The cells are more able to repair themselves after injury from ultraviolet radiation, the type of harmful rays put out by the sun, which contribute to aging skin and skin cancer.

Adult Acne- Suffer No More!

by Dr. Lisa Benest

Once considered a teenage right of passage, today many people suffer from adult acne. If you have this potentially embarrassing, but very manageable condition, you should know the possible causes for your acne and, more importantly, what treatments are now available to you.

The first step in the treatment of adult acne – or simply to have a youthful, healthy complexion - is to implement the following as part of your overall health and fitness regimen:

● Cleanse twice daily: washing more frequently can trigger an over-production of oil.
● Maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water between meals.
● Eat organic whenever possible: your body does not need the extra hormones and antibiotics found in typical meats, chicken or even farm-raised fish.
● Refrain from touching, picking, rubbing and squeezing pimples or break-out areas.
● Take care to keep hair sprays and gels on your hair but off your face.
● Use a moisturizer if you need one. You don’t have to dry out your skin to treat acne.
● Try an over-the-counter homeopathic remedy.

If these basic steps do not resolve your acne, you should contact your dermatologist to discuss other treatment options. Your dermatologist may go over some of the common conditions that can result in adult acne to help determine the best treatment approach for you. If you are one of the many people who suffer from adult acne, you have probably tried at least one if not many treatments for your condition. Here are some of the most common conditions that can result in adult acne and their respective treatment options:

Stress
Stress can result in a break out. The most effective treatment for stress-related acne is to relax! To spot treat blemishes, you can try a prescription strength topical antibiotic gel. For over the counter options, a dab of tea tree oil or acne treatments containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (a low strength, such as 2.5%, works as well as a higher strength with less skin irritation). You should see some relief by the next day. In the case of a large or painful pimple, call your dermatologist, as they may have a more powerful option.

Diet
The typical Western diet of processed food, refined carbohydrates and sugars contributes greatly to the incidence and severity of acne. Cutting out refined and processed foods will help keep you blemish free. Avoid artificial sweeteners (Xylitol or Stevia are ok), refined vegetable oils and dairy products. Supplement your diet with omega-3 fish oils. As an added benefit, this type of diet helps control obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol!

Problem zones
If you break out in one or several problem zones, you should suspect anything that comes in contact with your breakout area. It could be your telephone, your bangs or even your toothpaste or hair gel. Once you identify the cause, keep it out of contact with your face (i.e. clean your phone with alcohol, keep your hair off your face or discontinue the product). If you can’t identify the source on your own, your dermatologist should be able to help you figure it out.

Monthly period break-outs
Hormone imbalances can cause acne breakouts. Some birth control pills can keep pre-period breakouts under control by maintaining a balanced hormone level. If a hormone-based acne treatment isn’t an option, consider incorporating a cream called a retinoid (such as Retin-A, Differin or Tazorac) into your skin-care regimen. As an added bonus, you’ll also see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles!

Chronic acne conditions
Once you are diagnosed, your dermatologist might suggest a prescription medication. These include a variety of creams, or an oral medication such as an antibiotic.

All of these, even chronic acne conditions, are manageable if treated in coordination with your dermatologist. You should also contact your dermatologist to learn about other treatments available only in your dermatologist’s office, such as fruit acid peels or light-based (laser) treatments.
